Durant les dramatiques bombardements de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale à Londres, Sarah Miles, l'épouse d'un haut fonctionnaire britannique, s'éprend de Maurice Bendrix, un écrivain. Leur secrète liaison se déroule plus ou moins harmonieusement, à l'insu de tous, jusqu'à un dramatique week-end durant lequel Bendrix faillit perdre la vie. Depuis ce soir, Sarah a rompu toute relation avec son amant sans lui fournir d'explication.
